Previously, foreign visitors could only claim value-added tax (VAT) refunds at airports or departure points. Now, under a new pilot scheme, cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Chongqing are rolling out “Buy Now, Refund Now” options at select retail locations — allowing tourists to receive VAT refunds immediately at the point of purchase.

• On-the-Spot Refunds: Tourists can now claim VAT refunds instantly while shopping, eliminating the hassle of post-purchase paperwork at the airport.

• Wider Access: Beijing, for example, now has 16 pilot stores offering this service, including popular locations like Yansha Outlets and Beijing Yixi New World Department Store.

• More Convenience, More Spending: The aim is to streamline the process and encourage tourists to spend more during their visit, supporting local businesses.

This initiative is part of China’s broader efforts to revive and grow its tourism sector post-pandemic by making the country more tourist-friendly and retail-centric.
