NASA is bracing for major setbacks as the latest budget proposal from President Donald Trump calls for deep funding cuts that could cripple the agency’s scientific missions, climate research, and educational outreach.
The proposed fiscal year 2026 budget—widely seen as part of Trump’s broader effort to slash federal spending on climate science and space research—would reduce NASA’s Science Mission Directorate budget by nearly 47%, from $7.5 billion to $3.9 billion. The Earth Science division, which plays a vital role in monitoring climate change, is among the hardest hit.
Mars Missions, Earth Science, and Major Projects at Risk
If passed, the cuts would delay or cancel several flagship missions, including the Mars Sample Return, the Dragonfly rotorcraft to Titan, and the DAVINCI mission to Venus. The Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland—NASA’s largest science center—faces the possibility of a full shutdown, threatening up to 10,000 jobs and billions in research and infrastructure.
NASA Administrator Bill Nelson has called the proposed cuts “devastating,” warning they would have “potentially unrecoverable impacts” on America’s leadership in science and space exploration.
Trump’s Target: Climate and Space Science
Trump’s budget proposal reflects his long-standing skepticism of climate change and a desire to shift federal resources away from scientific research. The Guardian reports that internal documents reveal plans to dismantle climate-focused programs across NASA and NOAA. This echoes moves during his first term, when similar cuts were proposed but largely blocked by Congress.
The Minority University Research and Education Project, which supports underserved communities in STEM, is also on the chopping block. Its entire $46 million budget would be eliminated, while overall STEM engagement would drop by more than 35%.
Industry and Political Pushback
The proposed cuts have sparked outrage across the scientific and political spectrum. Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, called the move “troubling,” warning it could stall American innovation and leadership in space. Lawmakers, including Rep. Zoe Lofgren, have pledged to oppose the budget, calling it “idiotic and reckless.”
Environmental advocates are especially alarmed by the impact on Earth science missions, which provide critical data on global warming, sea level rise, and natural disasters.
A Turning Point for NASA
As the Trump-led budget heads to Congress, NASA’s future hangs in the balance. The agency’s ability to pursue ambitious scientific goals, from returning samples from Mars to monitoring Earth’s climate, could be severely compromised if the cuts are approved.
