On Monday, April 28, 2025, a widespread power outage plunged large parts of Spain and Portugal into darkness, disrupting transportation, communication systems, and daily life for millions. Major cities including Madrid, Lisbon, and Barcelona were hit hard, with metro systems halted, traffic lights failing, and airports briefly impacted. Massive blackouts in Spain and Portugal, leaving travelers in the dark. More than 50 million people across the Iberian Peninsula experienced interruptions in electricity services, making it one of the most significant blackouts in recent European history.
The exact cause of the outage is still under investigation. Portugal’s national grid operator, REN, initially suggested that extreme temperature changes may have caused โanomalous oscillationsโ in high-voltage power lines. However, Spanish meteorologists and energy experts quickly disputed that explanation, stating there was no unusual weather recorded at the time. Spanish grid operator Red Elรฉctrica later confirmed the issue stemmed from a large-scale disconnection in the southwest of the country but ruled out a cyberattack or sabotage.
Emergency measures were activated across both countries. Hospitals, airports, and emergency services switched to backup power to maintain operations. By Monday evening, electricity had been restored to most affected areas, but full grid normalization may take several more days as investigations continue. Both governments have vowed to strengthen infrastructure safeguards to prevent a similar incident in the future.
