Holland & Barrett, the UK’s leading wellness retailer, has announced the closure of all 12 of its Singapore stores. This move marks a significant retreat from the Southeast Asian market, where the company had established a presence to cater to the growing demand for health and wellness products.
The closures come amid a broader strategic shift by Holland & Barrett to focus on its core markets and streamline operations. In the UK, the company has been actively refurbishing stores and exploring new retail formats. For instance, in October 2024, Holland & Barrett celebrated the refurbishment of 315 stores within its latest financial year, including the opening of 35 new outlets.
Additionally, the company has been expanding its presence in travel hubs across the UK, capitalizing on the success of existing stores in stations and airports.
While specific details regarding the performance of the Singapore stores have not been publicly disclosed, the decision aligns with the company’s recent trend of closing underperforming locations. In 2020, Holland & Barrett faced challenges that led to the closure of 22 out of 23 stores in another market, highlighting the difficulties in maintaining profitability across diverse regions.
Customers in Singapore who have relied on Holland & Barrett for their wellness needs will now need to seek alternative retailers. The company has not provided information on any plans to re-enter the Singapore market in the future.
