Google is enhancing Gemini by integrating Opal, its vibe-coding tool for free AI-powered app development, directly into the Gemini web app. This allows users to create interactive, reusable mini apps—called Gems—without writing any code.
Opal Now Available Inside Gemini
Opal is Google’s tool for building AI-powered mini apps using natural language prompts. It is now accessible from the Gems Manager in the Gemini web app, making free app development faster and more accessible.
Users simply describe the app they want to create, and Opal uses Gemini’s AI models to generate it automatically. Once built, these mini apps can be reused to unlock more customized Gemini experiences.
What Are Gems?
Introduced in 2024, Gems are customized versions of Gemini designed for specific tasks. Google already offers pre-built Gems such as a learning coach, brainstorming assistant, career guide, coding partner, and editor. With Opal, users can now build their own custom Gems using free AI app development tools.
Visual Editor for No-Code App Building
Opal includes a visual editor that displays each step required to create a mini app. Users can rearrange and connect steps visually, without any programming knowledge.
A new Gemini view also converts written prompts into clear, step-by-step workflows, making it easier to understand, edit, and improve how mini apps work.
Advanced Editing with Opal
For more advanced customization, users can seamlessly switch from Gemini to Opal’s Advanced Editor at https://opal.google/, where they can access more granular controls and fine-tune their apps.
The Rise of Vibe-Coding
AI-powered “vibe-coding” has grown rapidly in recent years. Alongside Google Opal, startups like Lovable and Cursor, as well as AI platforms from Anthropic and OpenAI, are contributing to this expanding ecosystem. Consumer-focused tools such as Wabi are also helping bring AI app creation to a wider audience.
