Previously, foreign visitors could only claim value-added tax (VAT) refunds at airports or departure points. Now, under a new pilot scheme, cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Chongqing are rolling out “Buy Now, Refund Now” options at select retail locations — allowing tourists to receive VAT refunds immediately at the point of purchase.

• More Convenience, More Spending: The aim is to streamline the process and encourage tourists to spend more during their visit, supporting local businesses.
